for Over 30 Years
Steven M. Sweat Personal Injury Lawyers Scholarship Program
| Two awards. One deadline. Open to California students. Undergraduate Scholarship: $2,500 | Law School Scholarship: $1,500 | Annual deadline: March 31 |
Why We Created This Scholarship
Steven M. Sweat has spent more than 30 years representing California accident victims — people who were seriously injured through no fault of their own and who could not have obtained justice without access to affordable legal representation. Many of our clients came to us with nothing: no savings, no health insurance, and no idea where to turn. What they had was a legitimate claim and the determination to fight for what was right.
We believe that access to justice, like access to education, should not depend on the size of your bank account. That conviction drives both our legal practice and our commitment to the communities we serve throughout Los Angeles and Southern California.
The Steven M. Sweat Personal Injury Lawyers Scholarship Program awards two annual scholarships to deserving California students: one to an undergraduate pursuing any field of study at an accredited California institution, and one to a law student committed to using the legal system to help others. We hope these awards help exceptional students pursue their education — and carry that commitment to service into their careers.
Award 1 — Injury Victims Justice Scholarship $2,500
Who Should Apply
This award is open to undergraduate students at any accredited California college, university, or trade school. We especially encourage applications from students who have been personally affected by an accident or injury, or who are passionate about access to justice for people who cannot afford legal representation — though neither is required.
Eligibility Requirements
- Currently enrolled in or accepted to an accredited California college, university, community college, or trade school (UC, CSU, private, or community college transfer program)
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher (high school GPA for incoming first-year students; college GPA for continuing students)
- Demonstrated involvement in community, volunteer, or service activities
Application Requirements
- Essay (600–800 words): “How has a personal injury, accident, or sudden loss affected you or your family, and what does access to legal justice mean to communities that cannot afford legal representation?” First-person experience is welcome but not required. The essay may also address a community, public policy, or advocacy angle.
- Unofficial academic transcript (high school or college)
- Brief statement of financial need — one paragraph, optional but considered in judging
Award 2 — Law School Scholarship. $1,500
Who Should Apply
This award is open to students who have been accepted to or are currently enrolled in any ABA-accredited law school. It is intended for students with a genuine interest in plaintiff-side civil litigation, personal injury law, civil rights law, or public interest practice — the areas of law that give ordinary people a fighting chance against well-funded defendants.
Eligibility Requirements
- Accepted to or currently enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (undergraduate GPA for incoming 1L students; law school GPA for continuing students)
- Demonstrated interest in plaintiff-side civil litigation, personal injury, civil rights, or public interest law
Application Requirements
- Essay (600–800 words): “What role should plaintiff-side personal injury and civil rights law play in creating accountability for corporations, insurers, and institutions that harm ordinary people? How do you intend to use your legal education to advance access to justice?”
- Unofficial law school transcript (or undergraduate transcript for admitted but not yet enrolled students)
- Brief personal statement (one to two paragraphs) describing relevant experience or interest in plaintiff-side or public interest practice
