Petition: A civil pleading filed to the court requesting that an order be filed.
Plaintiff: The person that files a lawsuit.
Power of Attorney: A document that gives authorization to someone to act as an agent or legal representative on behalf of another person.
Precedent: A rule which was established as case law in a previous case that serves as a guide to the cases that follow.
Preponderance of Evidence: This is evidence that may be found to be of more relevance to the case than that which has been presented against it. It is by this weighting method that the plaintiff is to prove their case.
Privileged Communications: Information that is protected and may not be forced to disclosure in a court of law. Such types of communication may be those that are found between lawyers and clients, or doctors and their patients.
Punitive Damages: The award that is given to an injured person from the outcome of winning a civil lawsuit.

Quash: An action that may be taken to void a request, summons, indictment, or other relevant legal instrument or process.
